Lt. Col. (res.) Eitan Mines truly lives the country life. From his home in the the scenic Galilee region of northern Israel, his days are spent raising sheep and goats. In most other countries, his story would end here, but in Israel, everyone has a duty to protect their country. Up until recently, Lt. Col. (res.) Mines – a veteran of four Israeli wars – was an IDF reservist. “Having our own country is not a given,” he says. “It needs to be guarded constantly.”
Lt. Col. (res.) Mines has spent a good part of the past 47 years in uniform. As a soldier, then later as a reservist in the Intelligence Corps., he worked with reservists and helped them make the most of their annual reserve duty. Through short field trips, lectures and discussions, he taught them how to work together as a family and contribute meaningfully to the IDF.
Even after surviving a heart attack in 2009, Lt. Col. (res.) Mines continued serving as a reservist. Now, at the age of 65, he is retiring from the IDF. We thank him for his years of service to the country.
Imagine that you’re an Israeli teenager. You get called up to your first army draft. The doctor tells you that because of a medical condition you have, you’re not required to serve in the IDF. In place of those two-to-three tough years of service, you can do whatever you want – travel, university, work. Or, you could volunteer anyway. What would your answer be? Last week dozens of young Israelis who finished the IDF’s volunteer course answered with a resounding yes.
Rather than acting for the citizens of Gaza, Hamas has been strangling dissent and enforcing its particular extremist vision of society ever since taking power in a bloody coup d’etat in 2006. The terrorist group now in control of the Gaza Strip holds a Taliban-like grip over its citizens.
On Friday, September 20th, an IDF and ISA joint operation led to the discovery of the body of a murdered IDF soldier - Sgt. Tomer Hazan, age 20. The murderer confessed to having planned to use the body to bargain for the release of his brother imprisoned for involvement in multiple terror attacks.
